Penelope sat for 20 years awaiting the return of her husband Odysseus who was called to fight in the Trojan War. While her husband was away, Penelope had many suitors who wished to marry; she devised various strategies one of which was to pretend to weave a burial shroud for Odysseus’s elderly father Laertes; claiming that she would pick a suitor once she is finished. Every night for three years, she would undo part of the shroud and start again the next morning awaiting the next suitor. This woven sandal is a tribute to Penelope and the woven art.
